Venetian Vespers
Sacred music by Claudio Monteverdi and his contemporaries

Monteverdi wrote his famous Vespers in 1610 at the start of his tenure at Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice. But he wrote much more music for the Vespers service, and The Oriana Singers perform selections from his 1641 publication of that repertoire. The eight singers, plus a chamber ensemble of period instruments, also perform music by Alessandro Grandi, one of Monteverdi’s assistants at Saint Mark’s, and Salamone Rossi, who wrote Jewish sacred music in Monteverdi’s style.
